WEEK 11A: E-MAIL MARKETING

E-MAIL MARKETING:
For my business I think once a week up to once a month would be a good amount of Newsletter to send my customers without overloading them with too many e-mails.

Newsletters from Provence Decor: - Invitation to my Shows: A week before each show I will send an invitation to all my customers living close to the area where my show will take place giving them information about the show, my booth location, etc.
- New products: Whenever I get something new, I will send a Newsletter with pictures and description of the new product on the website.
- Specials: Whenever I have some products on sale, FREE Shipping, Special gifts with orders I will send a Newsletter to all my customers to let them know about my specials.
- Contests: I will promote some contests to get customers involved and engaged on the website, Facebook and other Social medias. Whenever I start a new contest, I will send a Newsletter to let all my customers know.

I want to keep my e-mails simple, consistent and only with information that are really interesting to my customers to avoid getting into the spam box or having them unsubscribe from my list.

I have subscribed to 3 of my competitors Newsletters but I haven’t received anything yet to know what they are doing but what I have noticed is that a lot of my competitors are not using Newsletter anymore, only Social Media.

WEEK 10B: CATEGORIES ON BLOGS

CATEGORIES FOR BUSINESS BLOGS:

Creating categories for a business blog would help keep different subjects organized and that would help customers easily find what they are interested at.
For my business I could create different categories such as:
New Products: for all new products available at the moment; Special Offers: anouncing all products on sale at the moment; Home Décor Ideas: Giving different ideas on how to use the products and starting a discussion about the subjec; Contest: To promote contests and have people excited to engage in the blog (best product picture, best home décor idea, etc.); Product Care: giving tips on how to care for each fabric and leaving that space open for questions and suggestions; Traveling to France: giving tips on where to go and what to do in France, opening up discussions and sharing experiences with customers that have been there already; Recipes: a place to find and share great French recipes and so on.
People love to engage, participate and give their opinions on different subjects if you manage to make it interesting, fun and exciting. The blog is wide open area to do that, with imagination you can create many ways to attract potential customers and make them interested enough to stay and become a loyal customers automatically making your business grow.

WEEK 10A: PERSONAL TOUCH ON BLOGS

ADDING PERSONAL INTERACTIONS ON YOUR BUSINESS BLOG:

If you have a business where you can have personal interaction with your customers, adding human interest to a post can appeal to their emotions because they will relate to you in a personal level.
For example, in my business, when I post videos or chats about my trips to France a lot of times customers want to buy some of my Traditional French products because it reminds them of the good times they had on their vacation going through the little markets in Provence. Also, adding a personal touch to your posts, makes the customer feel that they are directly connected to you and that encourages them to make comments, ask questions and trust that when they do business with you they will get a one to one special treatment. People like to feel special! Of course, even with a human touch, it is important to keep the posts professional and within the business interests. It can be easy to get off track and add personal posts that have no relation to what your business is offering. It is also important to always make sure not to neglect or discriminate any group of potential customers. If adding a human interest into your posts is appropriate for the kind of business you have, it can only help attract more customers because you will be offering a more personal online experience. People are buying online more and more but they still want to keep the social aspect to it and that’s when Social Media becomes so successful in our business.

WEEK 9 : TWITTER

I have chosen to follow those five Twitter users:

-Pottery Barn: Gives excellent ideas of how to decorate your home and also gives me great ideas on how to take professional pictures of my products for future posts.
-Williams Sonoma: Gives great recipes and decoration ideas as well.
-Interior Design: Like Pottery Barn also gives great home decoration insights to improve your home décor.
France-Voyage.com: Gives all sorts of tips on Trips to France which also helps me with my posts since I am focusing on different areas of France and their Traditional Home Décor.
Frenchly: Covers many different things about France (News, Fashion, Politics, Trips, etc.) which is great to keep updated on with what’s happening and getting ideas for posts that might interest my customers.

Yes, I did have to play around with many key words to find few connections that interested me, it is not easy to find really good ones.
Search words I used to find connections were:
Home Decoration, Home Decor, Interior Design, French décor, French Home Decor
French trips, Traveling in France
French news
Lists are a good way to organize everything by subject because when you start having many tweets going on, it can get really busy and confusing if everything is mixed up.
The lists are also very good to keep some tweets locked so competitors won’t be able to see strategic users you might be following.

I’ve created 4 different lists (French News, French Recipes, Trips to France, Home Décor) to organize my Tweets by subjects and make it easier when trying to find the subject desired.

I still don’t have any customer following me on twitter yet but I believe tweets would be more effective around lunch time, end of the day or weekends because that’s when most of my customers are not working and take time to check their social media.

WEEK 8B: VISUAL SOCIAL MEDIA

Visual Media definitely works for my business. My whole business is based on pictures of the tablecloths, gifts and accessories I sell. Most of the pictures are focused on the product itself (close up showing the details) and some are focused on how that product can be used on your home décor. Videos on YouTube will also be very important to show customers how to use and care for each product.

Businesses that are similar to mine:
April Cornell:
April Cornel
is very active on her Visual Social Media. Her main platform is Facebook.
Facebook (last post 7hrs ago) – She posts daily pictures of her products and videos; with 27000 followers, her posts average between 40-500 likes (her last post had 340 likes and 28 comments) which is ok comparing the amount of followers she has.
She is also very active on Instagram (last post 10hrs ago) with 1804 followers, her last had 80 likes and 3 comments.
Based on April Cornell’s Visual Social Media I can see that Facebook and Instagram are a must for my kind of business.

Williams Sonoma
:
William Sonoma is very active on his Visual Social Media. He uses all kinds of different Social Media Platforms:
-
Facebook (last post 10hrs ago) - On Facebook they post at least twice a day; with 781.000 followers, their posts average between 200-500 likes (last post had 262 likes, 71 shares and 4 comments) which is not that much when you compare to the total amount of followers.
- Instagram (last post 12hrs ago) - On Instagram they also post twice a day; with 549000 followers, their posts average between 5000-7000 likes (last post had 5229 likes, 27 comments) which is great for comparing to the amount of likes on Facebook.
- YouTube (last post January 2017) – On YouTube they have very interesting and professionally made videos; with 50000 they have a lot of views.
- Twitter (last post 14hrs ago) - On Twitter they post once to twice a day; with 97000 followers, their posts average between 5-20 likes (last post had 10 likes) which is really low for the amount of followers.
- Google+ (last post 15hrs ago) – On Google+ they post once a day; with 2million followers, their posts average 20-100 likes; definitely not much for the amount of followers.

Provence Soleil: This company only uses Facebook as their Visual Social Media. They post almost every day mainly pictures of France not much about their products. They have 239 followers and their posts average 1-2 likes.

Sur la Table:
This company uses Facebook, YouTube and Twitter as their visual Social Media.
Facebook (last post 7hrs ago):
On Facebook they post once a day; with 300000 followers, their posts average between 50-200 likes (last post had 32 likes, 1 shares and 2 comments) which is not that much when you compare to the total amount of followers.
YouTube (last post 1 month ago): On YouTube they have many videos showing how to use their products; with 13000 followers, they had 7000 views on the last video posted, which is a pretty good rate.
Twitter (last post 10hrs ago): On twitter they have 31000 followers, their posts average between 2 -10 likes which is basically nothing comparing to the amount of followers.
Twitter is definitely not on my top list as Visual Social Media.

WEEK 8A: VISUAL SOCIAL MEDIA

My business can definitely benefit from most Social Media Platforms mentioned bellow since it is very visual and diverse. I can use pictures to show the product itself, pictures showing the product as part of a Home Decor, I can also make videos showing how to care for different products, etc. but the main challenge here is to keep up with all of them. So unless you have a person dedicated only to the Social Media marketing of your business, you will have to choose which platform is best suited to your business success.

FACEBOOK: This is definitely my number one choice. It is the most widely used Social Media Platform, it is very user friendly and most of my potential customers are likely to have a Facebook Page. I can post pictures, videos, articles or anything related to France and French products to keep my followers connected.

INSTAGRAM: I always thought Instagram was mostly for personal use but the more I learn about it, the more I find the potential to expand my business through Instagram. It has a huge audience and it can be used instantly from anywhere with just a picture, a short video and a few words, just enough to capture the audience's attention and make them look for more.

GOOGLE+: I am definitely adding a Google+ page to my business. Mostly to help my SEO and to give me a better rank when customers are searching for my products. There are also many tools that Google+ provides that can help me capture my audience in different ways.

YOUTUBE: YouTube is amazing! You can search and find anything on YouTube and it has a great audience. It is a great platform for videos and I plan to add videos about my products, how to care for them, ideas on how to use the products to decorate your home, etc. I am not sure YouTube will be the greatest platform to build more customers, but I think I can add valuable material for the customers I already have.

TWITTER: I don' know much about Twitter, but I'm sure I can promote my business here since it has such a large audience. Since I will be using Instagram, I could just copy the same posts on Twitter and try to reach a different audience.

PINTERST: I don't know much about Pinterest and how it works but I am very curious to learn. I can see that it is very popular, very visual and has extremely interesting content. I am sure my business could benefit greatly from Pinterest since most users are women and that is my main target. I really need to get familiar with this platform to understand the best way to promote my business here.

TUMBLR: So far I don't have any plans to use this platform for my business. I don't know anything about it and I really don't think I will have time to keep up with every single Social Media Platform out there; so unless during this class I find extreme value to have TUMBLR for my business, I won't be using it.

SNAPCHAT: I am also not familiar with this one and I don't see how my business could benefit from posts that after showing them, they disappear. I think it would be hard to keep up with this one.

WEEK 7B: SCHEDULED FACEBOOK POSTS

I think my posts will engage my audience because they are not only focused on the sales of my products but also on different topics about France like: French Recipes, Trips to France, French Songs, French Restaurants, etc.
I believe if I keep my posts interesting, informative and not only about my products it will capture anyone interested in France and French culture, and those are probably my potential customers. Keeping posts diverse will also give people that don’t want to receive sales adds a reason to follow my page and whenever they need some French products to decorate their home, they will remember my company.
My goal on Facebook is also to create events to keep them engaged: games, competitions, etc.
For my scheduled posts I chose the peak time (Between 12pm and 3pm) and peak days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) hoping will have a greater “Reach” and hopefully more followers.

WEEK 7A: 7 BUSINESSES LIKED BY PROVECE DECOR

Businesses liked by Provence Decor:

My target market consists of Interior designers (or any other profession related to Home Decoration) and customers (mostly women - 35 and older) with good financial situation who have interest and means to redecorate their homes with high end European products.

1- Crudo by Pascal Lorange (https://www.facebook.com/crudobypascallorange/)
2- Fabrison's French Creperie and Cafe (https://www.facebook.com/Fabrisons.Creperie/)

The other businesses are either Interior Design Companies, Interior Design Magazines and Interior Design Blogs.
3- Interior Design Ideas for Home Decor
https://www.facebook.com/InteriorDesign4/
4- Interior Design Magazine
https://www.facebook.com/InteriorDesignMagazine/
5- Diane Designs and Associates
https://www.facebook.com/dianedesignsassociates/
6- Hooked on Houses Blog
https://www.facebook.com/hookedonhousesblog/
7- Sherry Anne Interiors
https://www.facebook.com/Sherry-Anne-Interiors-296802036132/?ref=br_rs

Learning how to use other business Facebook Pages to promote your own is a great marketing strategy.

I believe all those companies I chose to "like", either have customers that might be interested in our products or the company itself might be interested in our products to offer their customers when they decorate their homes. Liking these companies will expose my business to their followers and by engaging on their posts as Provence Decor, I might get some connections as well.

"Feature Likes" allows me to select the companies I want to show being connected to and also allows me to hide the ones I want to be connected for strategic reasons but don't want my competitors to know about.

WEEK 6B: POST REACH & POST ENGAGEMENT

This is my first time creating a Business page and exploring Facebook.
I've had a personal page for a while but only to keep in touch with family and friends and I never though Facebook could become so complex and confusing when trying to use it professionally. With so many things to learn (different tools, definitions, performance graphics) it can get overwhelming but also exciting when you discover all the new possibilities available to improve your business.

For this assignment I have read some articles and blogs to understand the difference between Post Reach and Post Engagement, the importance of them and how this information can improve my business.
Post Reach: When you post something on your page, it will reach a certain amount of people and Post Reach will measure how many people have seen your post (how many people have received your post on their Newsfeed).
Post Engagement: When you post something on your page, it will reach a certain amount of people and some of those people will view, click, comment, like or share your post. Post engagement will measure how many people have taken some action on your post.

Knowing the difference is important because you might think that your posts are doing really well when it reaches a lot of people (when your "Reach" number is high) but actually nobody is interested in what you have been posting and they are not engaging (your "Engagement" number is low).
It is important to reach a great amount of people, but it is also important to see if potential customers are interested in what you have been posting because if not many people are engaging, you won't get much business.
If your "Reach" number is high and your "Engagement" number is low, you need to change your approach on your posts or your business won't succeed.

The Insight helps you understand how your page is doing according to what you have been posting by showing results on the "Action on Page", "Page Views", "Page Likes", "Reach" and "Post Engagements". For each post it will also show the amount of people it reached, how many post clicks, reactions, comments and shares it had. With this information you can observe and understand your potential customers likes and dislikes and take some important Marketing decisions to decide what you should focus on and what you should avoid to accomplish your goal and have a successful business.

WEEK 6A: FACEBOOK PAGE FOR PROVENCE DECOR

The URL for Provence Decor Facebook Page is:

https://www.facebook.com/provencedecorUSA/

WEEK 5B: PROVENCE DECOR

Provence Decor is specialized in selling French tablecloths, napkins, runners, dishtowels and unique gifts from all over Europe. With this business we are trying to offer the US market a whole variety of unique, high end and excellent quality European products that can't be easily found in most regular stores.

So far we have been selling directly to the public at Home/Garden Shows and to some wholesale accounts. Last year (as my E-Commerce final project), I created my website: www.provencedecor.com which I am still improving and trying to reach customers on the web.

After many years of selling this product direct to the public, I have learned that my target market consists of Interior designers (or any other profession related to Home Decoration) and customers (mostly women - 35 and older) with good financial situation who have interest and means to redecorate their homes with high end European products. These customers are normally very social, like to entertain, love to change their home decoration on each different season of the year. They are also well educated, most of them have been to Europe and appreciate the history and tradition of those products. Through all those years, I have learned how to look for the right events to sell in areas where my target market is and now I am looking forward to learning how to reach the same market through Social Media.

WEEK 5A: COMPANIES TARGET MARKET

For this assignment I chose Chili's and Teri Cafe. They are both really nice restaurants serving completely different kinds of foods. Chili's is a big chain with locations around the country and Teri's Cafe is a small restaurant with two locations in  Oceanside, San Diego.

Chili's is a Mexican Restaurant with an American touch (with the Burgers, Crispers, Ribs, etc). It tries to reach people of all ages, ethnicity and education. It has an affordable menu so young people and big families can go and enjoy.

Teri's Cafe is an Asian Restaurant with a mix of Teriyaki / Sushi Menu. It tries to reach people that like Asian Cuisine and of course, the Asian crowd. It also has an affordable menu so anyone can enjoy. For this kind of food I think age and ethnicity is restricted.

There is a big difference on their websites, Chili's has a very dynamic website with great videos, professional pictures and lots of contents about their company. It is very engaging and user friendly. Colors are simple and happy, offering great contrast. When you start browsing their MENU the pictures are so perfect that make you want to try everything on it. When you go to "OUR STORY" link, you connect with them through their stories and pictures. They have an awesome approach on their website where they show great value for family and community.

Teri's Cafe has a simple and direct website. It is a nice website and also user friendly but not so engaging as Chili's. It is very straight forward and they don't offer much content about themselves or their company making it hard to connect. They basically use few links to show what they offer and to get you directly to the information you are looking for.

In conclusion, Chili's and Teri's Cafe are very different restaurants with very different approaches. They both reach to people of all income but different age, personality and lifestyle. The food they offer are completely different and since Chili's is trying to reach customers all over the Country and Teri's Cafe is trying to attract local customers, their crossover would be minimum.

WEEK 4B: WEBSITES FREQUENTLY USED

The blogs I commented on:
Croft_Davina
Getz_Jordyn
Phillips_Michael

The websites I use the most are Amazon and Netflix:

www.amazon.com
Amazon is a website that has achieved every goal any website wants achieve.
Its design and marketing are amazing. It is simple, professional, user friendly, easy to navigate, easy to find what you are looking for and most of all “really easy to buy from” (now with just one click!).
They have an infinite amount of content that will keep any consumer interested and navigating for hours. You can basically find anything you are looking for.
The reviews help consumers make their choices and avoid getting bad products.
The fast and most of the time FREE Shipping makes the purchase very convenient.
The marketing is awesome, it keeps track of everything you have viewed in the past and makes suggestions of what might interest you based on your searches.
Due to all of that combined, most likely Amazon will achieve their ultimate goal: a SALE! Users will end up buying something and coming back for more!
Amazon is a website I go to all the time. I find anything I want, I love having the reviews to check how good the products are, I trust their service and with the convenience of having a fast FREE shipping I end up buying from Amazon all the time.
I can’t really find anything I would improve on Amazon website.

www.netflix.com
Netflix was the first website to make every Movie and TV Shows Lover’s dream come true.
With just one click, in few seconds you can be watching your favorite movie or show.
Besides streaming on your TV, now you can also download most of the movies/shows to your device and watch them any time (which is great specially on a flight).
Their website is beautifully designed with great professional pictures.
It is very simple to navigate and very easy to find what you are looking for.
They have a great marketing system of promoting New Releases, most watched movies and shows. It is great how they make suggestions based on what you have watched before and keep records of what you have already watched or where you left off on a movie/show.
Netflix is a website I’ve been using for a long time. Everything I could think about on how they could improve their website in the past, they have already done and it works great.
I can’t really find anything I would improve on Netflix website.

WEEK 4A: AESTHETIC, DESIGN AND BRANDING

The two websites I chose to identify the problems for visitors are:
Penny Juice and Spot Metering.

1) It is a very poorly designed website. I would be surprised if they get any sales from it. The Home Page doesn't explain at all what the Website is all about.
It should have more content explaining what they are trying to sell.
Improvement: They should put on their Home Page more information about the company and the product they are trying to sell. Offering more information would make consumers interested and willing to navigate further.

2) Very confusing. Too much going on at the same time.
The HTML version is already too much, when you click on the FLASH version you can barely stay on the page. Contrast may be a good thing to catch consumer's attention but they went way overboard with all the flashy colors, it hurts the eyes.
I also don't like the font they chose and how the text is so close together, there are no spaces between paragraphs.
When I look at their pages, I don't even feel like reading them.
Improvement: They should definitely reduce the amount of colors, use more elegant and subtle colors. Choose a better font and give more space between paragraphs to make it easier to read and less confusing.

3) There aren't many links, very hard to navigate.
Improvement: They should add links to the Home Page and all other pages so we can navigate better between them and find what we need.

1) It is also a very poorly designed website. It is not visually appealing at all.
It is very busy, with very poor choice of colors and fonts. The flash feature on top of the Home Page is totally unnecessary and disturbing. The links on top are also really unattractive.
The mixed bright colors fonts against the black background and the way they mix all kinds of different font types and sizes is really annoying. You don't feel like reading anything at all.
For photographers that normally have good eyes for pictures and colors they will probably get shocked and run away from that site in an instant.
Improvement: I would start designing that website from zero and choose everything different. I would start looking for a nicer Page Layout that is clear and professional. I would change the background, font colors and types and remove all those flash features.

2) The whole page is very confusing, not user friendly at all. In this website they used way too much content on the Home Page having to scroll down for a long time to find something. It's important to have content but also organize that  content in a way that doesn't get confusing for consumers so they don't get lost and frustrated.
Improvement: I would organize the content of this website in a more structured way so users can find the information they need in a easy and logical way.

3) The way this website was designed does not promote credibility. The branding is very weak and doesn't give users the trust they need to use that product. I don't think I would trust to buy a product from a site like that. When the website doesn't look appealing and professional you wonder if the business is serious and professional as well.
Improvement: After working on the aesthetics of the website I would concentrate on branding that product in a more professional and appealing way so consumers feel like they need to have that product.

The two websites I chose to identify what they have done right are:
Toyota and Apple

This company is a no brainer. They probably have the best team working on their website to make it have all the good qualities a website need to be successful.
Aesthetic and branding are awesome: great pictures, great colors. The contrast is just right to catch consumer's attention without being flashy. This website is very effective because it uses aesthetic and branding just right to appeal the target audience.
This website is definitely user friendly. Links are clear and the content is very organized.
Buying a car is a big decision and this website has all the qualities to show consumers that they are very professional and you can trust the company as well as their product.

Just like Toyota Apple also has a great team behind their website design to make it just right. Aesthetic is simple but very elegant, neutral colors and beautiful pictures to makes consumers want to have their product. This website also uses aesthetic and branding in the perfect way to attract its audience.
Website is user friendly, links are clear, content is well distributed within its links making it very easy to find what you are looking for.
Although Toyota keeps their Social Media very active through Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Google+ and Instagram, I couldn't find where Apple keeps up with Social Media. I found a Newsroom where they post News about their products and other events but no Social Media. They probably don't feel the need to keep up with Social Media since their product is so well established around the world.

How does design, aesthetics and branding impact your reaction to the websites?

The visual impact is the first impression consumers get from your website, so it has to be visually appealing. It needs to have professional and good looking pictures that are relevant to the website as well as nice backgrounds, fonts and colors. Then it needs structure. A website needs to be easy to understand and navigate. If the content is not presented in a logic and organized way, consumers will get lost, frustrated and they will leave.
And of course it needs interesting and relevant content.
What makes consumers want to visit, stay and come back later to your website is the product and/or information you have to offer. On your website you need to offer something consumers want, need and/or are interested at.
All those features mentioned above are crucial to the success of your website. If you fail to offer that, most likely you will have a hard time keeping your online business.

WEEK 3B: FIVE BUSINESSES WEBSITE AND SOCIAL MEDIA

1) BUSINESS NAME: April Cornell
    URL: http://www.aprilcornell.com
    SOCIAL MEDIA USED:
    - Facebook: Last post on February 11th, 2017
    - Pinterest: Last post (Couldn't find the date) seems pretty recent since it has all the
      Spring Collection.
    - Instagram: Last post on February 9th, 2017
    ANALYSIS:
April Cornell seems to be very active in all 3 Social Medias she uses. She has a lot of
posts, pictures and a huge variety of products. She is equally active in Facebook and
    Instagram posting something every day.

2) BUSINESS NAME: Williams Sonoma
    URL: http://www.williams-sonoma.com
    SOCIAL MEDIA USED:
    - Facebook: Last post on February 12th, 2017
    - Twitter: Last post on February 12th, 2017
    - Google+: Last post on February 12th, 2017
    - Instagram: Last post on February 12th, 2017
    - Youtube: Last post 2 weeks ago (today is: 2/12/17)
    - Pinterest: Last post (Couldn't find the date) seems pretty recent
    - Tumblr: Last post March 4th, 2016
    ANALYSIS:
Williams Sonoma is definitely very active in Social Media since it has recent posts,
sometimes more than one a day on every single Social Media they use (except for
Tumblr: last post is old). As a big company I am sure they have people or companies
hired to keep them all updated.

3) BUSINESS NAME: Wayfair
    URL: https://www.wayfair.com
    SOCIAL MEDIA USED:
    - Twitter: Last post on February 12th, 2017
    - Facebook: Last post on February 12th, 2017
    - Pinterest: Last post (Couldn't find the date) seems pretty recent
    - Google+: Last post on February 10th, 2017
    - Instagram: Last post on February 12th, 2017
    ANALYSIS:
Mayfair is definitely very active in Social Media since it has recent posts, sometimes
more than one a day on every single Social Media they use. Like Williams Sonoma it
is also a big company that probably has people or companies hired to keep them all
    updated.

4) BUSINESS NAME: Provence Soleil
    URL: http://www.provencesoleil.com
    SOCIAL MEDIA USED:
    - Facebook: Last post on January 29th, 2017
    ANALYSIS:
Provence Soleil only only uses Facebook as its Social Media but it seems to be active
and has a decent amount of followers.

5) BUSINESS NAME: Sur la Table
    URL: http://www.surlatable.com
    SOCIAL MEDIA USED:
    - Blog: Last post on January 4th, 2017
    - Facebook: Last post on February 12, 2017
    - Youtube: Last post 3 weeks ago (today is: 2/12/17)
    - Twitter: Last post on February 10th, 2017
    ANALYSIS:
Sur la Table has a blog but it doesn't seem to be as active as the other Social Medias
they use. It looks like Facebook is the main one since they have very many recent
posts and a big variety of products.

CONCLUSION:
After checking all those websites I've discovered that most of the Linens and Home Decor businesses don't use blog as their Social Media.
Facebook, Instagram and Twitter seem to be the most popular ones.
I've noticed that consumers really enjoy engaging in Social Media but you have to be very active and update posts all the time to keep your followers interested so they will keep coming back.

WEEK 3A: COMMUNICATION - BUSINESS & CONSUMER

Who hasn’t experienced difficulty communicating with a business?

When you call Customer Service, it can be the highlight of your day if you can get things resolved fast and without a conflict but most likely it will be your worst nightmare.
A lot of companies (specially the big ones), if you are calling to ask about their product/service, most likely you won’t wait for long and you will get a nice person that will take the time to answer all your questions.
On the other hand, if you are calling because there is something wrong with their product/service, or your bill…that is another story.
Not only you will wait forever to get someone on the line (you better put your phone on speaker and do other things while you wait) but most likely they will keep transferring you to different departments.
Eventually, if you are lucky, you will get a helpful person that will try to help solve your problem, otherwise you will be in an endless battle.
This situation still goes on but with Social Media it is getting better.

Social Media gave businesses the opportunity to promote, advertise and communicate with consumers but most of all, it gave consumers a way to review products/services before making their choice, compare and look for better ones and most importantly, it gave consumers a voice and power to protect their consumer’s rights.

Many years ago (before Social Media), I had the worst experience with my Cellular Phone company. Every month (even though I barely used my phone, let alone the Internet on it) I kept getting charged for extra data.
No matter how many times I called Customer Service trying to explain that I didn’t use all that data, they kept saying that there was nothing they could do: “Whatever is registered in our system is what counts!”.
So I ended up having to pay for something that I never used, I had no way to fight back or let others know what was happening and to make things worse, I couldn’t even cancel my service because I was stuck in a “contract”.

Nowadays, if I have problems like this, all I have to say is: “If you can’t help me with this issue, I will have to leave a review explaining the experience I had with your company and your service”.
As expected, after saying that, they will normally change their attitude and try to work with you because they know that not only they might lose your business but from your bad review they might lose many more.

Even though I haven’t had an experience communicating with a business through social media yet, I think Social Media makes it easier to get problems solved in many ways.

On the other hand, as Social Media gave voice and power to consumers to fight for their rights, it also made companies (especially the small ones) vulnerable to negative situations they can’t control.

As a business owner, I try to respond to every issue “positive or negative” in the most respectful and professional way possible, even when the customer is wrong.
Human interaction is not always easy and you can’t control how people are going to react.
No matter how much you try doing your best, it takes just one person that is having a bad day or just have a bad attitude to create a conflict and most likely to leave you a negative review and damage your business reputation.

In my opinion, Social Media is a really good thing for both consumers and businesses if used honestly, respectfully and in a constructive way.

The same way Social Media can help businesses grow really fast, it can also damage them in the same speed.

WEEK 2A: OVERVIEW OF SOCIAL MEDIA USE

I am not very familiar with Social Media Platforms but it seems to me that most of them (except for LinkedIn that is mostly directed towards businesses) can be used to a certain extent for both personal and business.

In my opinion, Social Media Platforms are becoming more and more popular for both personal and business use. Nowadays (with the Internet World) life moves so fast, everyone is always so busy trying to catch up. No one seems to have much time to socialize or keep in touch anymore.
Social Media gives this new generation of busy people the opportunity to stay connected and socialize (even if it is only virtually connected) with the little time they have.

For business use (specially small businesses) Social Media Platforms offer a great opportunity for them to advertise with a small cost and keep a direct and personal relationship with the customers.
Before marketing was a luxury only to businesses that could afford to advertise on newspapers, magazines, radio or TV. Small businesses had no chance competing with big corporations. Thanks to Social Media this has changed and now any business has the opportunity to become known and successful.

Instagram seems to be best for personal use since it is based on a quick interaction of sharing pictures. Of course, you could always post pictures to promote your business but it doesn't offer much interaction.

Facebook seems to be the most popular for both personal and business use. It lets you share pictures, videos and interact with your customers and friends through messages or discussion groups.
For personal use Facebook is great because you can reconnect with friends you lost in the past, keep in touch with family and friends and also find new groups of friends that have the same interests as you.
For business use it is also great because it provides you with tools to share with customers what your business is all about, promote new products and advertise events. Facebook has this huge community of "possible customers" already connected.

LinkedIn seems to be directed to companies and professionals only, providing them with tools to interact and connect like: companies posting jobs, professionals looking for jobs, companies looking for other companies services, etc.

It seems to me that Social Media Platforms will keep growing and becoming more and more popular in the future. If we want to stay "connected" we will need to find out which ones are out there, understand how they work, what they are for and join them depending on our needs and goals.

WEEK 1A: MY TEMPLATE

This is my very first attempt to create a Blog and I am very excited to start learning about all different kinds of Social Media.

I wasn't really sure which template to use since I was looking for one where I could change the background picture depending on the subject of the blog.
I tried many different ones but couldn't find one that gave me the option to upload my own background picture so I am still looking for the perfect template for my Blog or maybe I just need to learn how to use Blogger's tools better.

In the meantime, I chose this one because I love nature.
I love walking, hiking, camping and traveling discovering the beauties of nature.
I also love taking pictures. When I travel I take hundreds of pictures because I feel like I have to register and share every special moment and place with everyone.

It looks like there is a lot to learn using "Blogger.com" and I hope by the end of this course I will be able to create amazing Blogs that people will find interesting and will keep following.
